Where do our values come from?

Our values are shaped by influences such as family, culture, religion, and friends. As we grow, it is important to identify our own values and let them guide our behavior. When our actions do not align with our values, we may feel conflicted or guilty, prompting us to reflect on what truly matters to us. Understanding and confidently expressing our values helps others respect our opinions, decisions, and boundaries.

Consent matters

Consent means that people are actively willing to engage in a particular behavior or activity and express their consent by saying "Yes! That is ok with me" verbally or through non-verbal gestures like nodding their head, sign language, or a written sign. What does consent mean in romantic or sexual relationships?

Respecting differences

Some people are treated badly because of their gender, religion, ethnicity, culture, race, sexual orientation, social position, or other personal traits. This negative treatment is called discrimination. Discrimination causes harm because it stops people from having equal opportunities and from living in safety. One such group is people with disabilities. Their rights are often violated because of many challenges such as stigma and discrimination, difficulty giving clear verbal consent, limited mobility, and poor access to information and services.

Healthy and unhealthy relationships

There are different types of relationships that people have, such as relationships between friends, with family, or romantic relationships. No matter what kinds of relationships people have, there are relationships that are healthy, while others can be unhealthy.

Often the good qualities that we look for in a friend are also important in a romantic relationship.

Let's reflect: Are there any additional qualities that are important for a romantic partner? Take a moment to think about your answer. This is just for you.

Every family is unique

A family is a group of people related to one another by blood, marriage, or a strong common bond. Families come in many different sizes and combinations. Some people you know may have one parent, while others may have two biological parents. Some families have children, while others do not. Your family may look and function very differently from the families of your friends, and that is okay. There is no right or wrong way for a family to be structured or to look. What is most important about families is that they love and take care of each other.
