Gender norms and gender stereotypes created by our societies may lead to unequal treatment, discrimination, and violence. Gender-based violence (GBV) is violence that is committed against a person or a group on the basis of their gender. It can be based on gender roles, expectations, or limitations and it includes any harm that results from power inequities based on gender roles. It both reflects and reinforces inequalities between men and women.
