Where does it infect?
The urethra (tube you pee through), cervix and sometimes mouth, throat, eyes and anus
How is it passed on?
• Unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex
• Sharing sex toys
What are the symptoms?
Usually, no symptoms, but may include:
• Unusual discharge (watery or creamy fluid) from the penis, vagina or anus
• Pain during sex
• Pain when peeing
• Sore dry throat
• Conjunctivitis (eye inflammation)
• Girls may notice bleeding after sex in between periods
• Pain in stomach
How is it tested for?
Urine test (pee in a cup) or a swab test from the vagina, penis, anus or throat.
How is it treated?
Injection and oral antibiotics (medicine)
What can be the long-term complications?
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, chronic pain
