What does “gender equality” mean?
Gender equality means equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities for women and men, girls and boys. It means that our rights, responsibilities, and opportunities will not depend on whether we are born male or female.
Gender inequality is not just a woman’s issue and it’s important that men promote equal rights and treatment for women.
What does “gender-based violence (GBV)” mean?
Gender-based violence is any act (including threats of such act) that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, emotional or psychological harm to women, that is perpetrated against a person because of her/his gender and the socially ascribed norms, roles, and expectations that society has for women and men (FIJI NAP EVAWG).
GBV is mostly experienced by women and girls, although in some situations, boys and men can experience GBV. The negative health, social and economic impacts of GBV affect the individual, families and communities.
The root causes of GBV are gender inequality, lack of respect for a person’s human rights and the abuse of power.
