  • Menstruation or period: is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a woman’s monthly cycle. Every month the body prepares for pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, the uterus sheds its lining. The menstrual blood is partially blood and partially tissue from inside the uterus. Generally, a period lasts between 3 to 7 days. The average menstrual cycle is about 25 – 30 days. If you get pregnant, your body needs the lining of the uterus – that’s why your period stops during pregnancy. Your period comes back when you are not pregnant any more.
  • Menarche: is the onset of menstruation, the time when girls has the first menstrual cycle which usually begins between the ages of 9 and 14, although sometimes as early as 8 and as late as 17 (The median age of menarche is 12 years while boys’ first ejaculation occurs around the age of 13). The first period is also a sign that puberty has begun.
  • Menstrual hygiene management: refers to management of hygiene associated with menstrual process. Women and adolescent girls should be using clean menstrual management materials to absorb and collect menstrual blood that can be changed in privacy as often as necessary for the duration of a menstrual period, using soap and water for washing the body as required, and having access to safe and convenient facilities to dispose used menstrual management materials.
  • Menstrual hygiene materials: are products used to catch menstrual flow, such as pads, clothes, underwear and pain relief items.
  • Menstrual facilities: are those facilities associated with safe and dignified menstruation, such as toilets and water infrastructure.
