Everything about your organs and how they work

The parts of a girl's body that are in the genital area constitute her sexual and reproductive systems. The female sexual organs are also known as reproductive organs because they are the parts of the body that allow women to reproduce (have children). In other words, you have reproductive and sexual organs inside and outside your body.

Outside the Body:

Vulva: All the external parts of the female reproductive system together are called the vulva. What does that mean? It means that the vulva covers the opening to the vagina, the labia, the clitoris and the opening to the urethra (where pee comes out).

Lips: These are the lips, each girl has two pairs of lips. The outer labia are thicker folds covered in pubic hair. Within the outer lips is a second set of smaller, softer lips, the inner lips.

The inner and outer lips can be any color, size or shape.

Clitoris: It is a small pea-sized ''button'' located at the front of the vulva, where the folds of the labia come together. It is very sensitive to touch and is the only organ (in both women and men) whose sole purpose is sexual pleasure.

Inside the Body:

Vagina: It is a hollow muscular canal that runs from the vaginal opening to the uterus. During sexual intercourse, the vagina receives the penis, during menstruation, the menstrual flow leaves the body through the vagina and during childbirth, the baby's body exits through the vagina in natural birth.

Hymen: It is a thin membrane that surrounds and covers the opening of the vagina in some girls. Some girls are born without hymens and others tear them during daily activities such as sports. If you still have your hymen when you have sex for the first time it may tear and bleed slightly.

Cervix: It is the lower and narrow part of the uterus, it has a small opening that connects the uterus to the vagina. Menstrual flow leaves the uterus through this opening and sperm enter the uterus through it as well.

Fallopian tubes: These are two tubes that lead from the ovaries to the uterus. They are very small like two strands of human hair. Eggs travel through these tubes and sperm travel up them. If the egg and sperm meet, the egg will be fertilized and a pregnancy will result.
